January Review of my 2011 Goals

It’s goal review time. How did you do?  January is behind us, and for most people their goals are a thing of the past.  They’ve gone back to what’s comfortable and easy.  Not for us Rhino’s, we charge ahead.  Yes we might of stumbled a few times, but we press on!

Here’s how I did in January on my goals.

Pray/Meditate Everyday

I am very proud to say that I made it all the way through the month doing this.  Connecting with something greater than myself has helped me immensely on attaining some of my other goals (more on that later).  I have to give a shout out to my wife here as well.  Several times it was by her prompting that I remembered to do this.  Thanks to her!

Live Abundantly

I’ve really tried to apply this principal this month.  Whenever I would feel like things were getting dark, and I wanted to ball up in a corner, I would do my best to change my view and see things through a better light.  You can’t will abundance into your life, you have to truly embrace the fact that life has much to offer.  Unless you really make it a part of your fabric, then it’s just lip-service.  This takes practice.  I’m still learning.

As practice for this, I took a significant step towards developing my career on my passion.  I left my comfort zone job of over 10 years, and started anew on my own.  Most people that will read this is well aware of what I’ve done.  If not, check out this link.  I think this took most people by surprise.  But I was absolutely serious when I made that goal.  Frankly, it’s been a goal for many years, I just lacked the confidence to do it.  I told you 2011 would change my life…

Follow Rules / Become a Disciplined Person

This I need help with.  With significant change in my work situation, came new challenges that frankly I was not ready for.  Discipline is something I need to re-commit to.  Part of this, is to define what kind of discipline I need to achieve the level of success I want.  It’s a simple formula, I just need to figure out the variables.

Get up at 6am (or earlier)

See result above…  I really did lousy on this one.  Sure, I did it a few times, but not consistently enough to form a habit.  I think I may have tried to reach to far on this one, so it became one of those “it’s too much, so I’m not going to do it at all” sort of things.  I have decided to readjust this to 7Am, and form a habit from there.  Then I can re-evaluate and go deeper if needed.

Become a Better Triathlete

This winter has been all about swimming for me.  I figure I swam about 30 miles over the months of December and January. Partly because I can do it indoors, where the temperature is always consistent, but also I felt like it was the one sport of the three that I could possibly keep up with the top half of my age group.  Also, if I were to be completely honest with myself, I was burnt out of running and needed a good excuse to do something else.  Now that the temps are rising, I really need to get back out on the road.  Both for riding and running.

Keep My Thoughts Pure and Positive

I feel really good about my progress to this one.  As a matter of fact, I feel probably the best on this one than any other goal.  I am more focused, more centered than I have ever felt.  I attribute all of this to actively working towards this goal.

Take the next step towards Vegetarianism

This one, like the 6Am one, was going to be a real stretch.  Or so I thought.  I actually did really good on this.  I did not eat any red meat during the month of January, and frankly didn’t ever feel like I was going without.  I did eat chicken a bit more often than I had originally planned, but even then not more than a few times a week.  I never missed it.  My secret weapon on this goal is Quinoa.  Love that stuff.  You can buy it at Costco for about $10 bucks a bag.  A bag will last our family the better part of a month.  Alisha and I like it, the kids like it, it’s a win all around.  It’s a fantastic protein source, and packed full of other nutrients.  You cook it like you would rice, and it really takes well to whatever seasonings you throw on it.  We use it in soups and salads for the family, and I love it plain with steamed broccoli.  It made attaining this goal really quite easy.

So that’s my January wrap up.  Hope you did great on your goals. If you did, Great!   If not: review, re-commit, then get after them!
